In short

At a silent party with three headphone channels, people follow each other's visible joy instead of negotiating music. Communication moves to the body — and after hours of hardly any talking, the group ends the night closer than after most evenings full of words.

The biggest surprise of Drugged and Kidnapped has nothing to do with drugs.

I expected good music, dancing, altered states — that was the plan, and the plan works. What I had never expected was the intimacy. A group spends four hours together, talks remarkably little, listens to different music through headphones at the same time. And still ends the night feeling like they shared something deeply personal.

On paper, that reads like a contradiction. On the floor, it is lived reality.

Chapter 01
A woman in green light dances at the centre of a room where others glow purple, blue and red, titled “What the Hell Is Happening on Green?”

What the Hell Is Happening on Green?

The hostages move through what used to be my living room — for tonight, it's the zone or the other planet. Everyone is inside their own music. I'm on channel blue. Two people at the far end are on green, and their green looks electric — I catch myself thinking: what the hell is happening over there?

So I switch. Sometimes I get it immediately and stay. Sometimes I listen for twenty seconds and think: interesting, we are in very different places right now. Then I move on to red. The two on green have been watching my headphone light the whole time: it turned green when I joined them, red when I moved on. Now one of them wants to know what I found on red. One switches, another follows, and a minute later the whole floor glows red. Six people partying on the same track, and the migration happened without a single spoken word.

The feeling is indescribable. And it is very much based on the freedom of choice. You feel how special it is that everybody chooses the same vibe, although they are free to choose another.

You feel how special it is that everybody chooses the same vibe, although they are free to choose another.

This is only one of uncountable dynamics happening between us, through and because of the three channels and the lights that signal who is listening to what. It sparks curiosity, diversity, freedom of choice. It also sometimes creates alliances, two or more groups "friendly against" the others, or the lone-wolf experience when you are the only one on blue, and many, many more.

When the song ends we scatter back into our own channels. The group breathes like this all night: it gathers on one colour, then dissolves into three.

Nobody proposed a track. Nobody negotiated. One person followed their own curiosity and accidentally started a migration — and for five minutes, everybody shared one emotional world. Influence at this party works exactly like that, all night long.

Chapter 02
Dancers with different coloured headphones turn towards a woman glowing in gold, titled “Influence Without Control”

Influence Without Control

At normal parties, musical influence is a power question. Somebody controls the playlist, the DJ controls the floor, a guest lobbies for a song, another guest complains, and every music discussion threatens to become a small democracy nobody wanted to join.

The headphones rewire this completely. You influence people through your visible experience. When a track lights you up, everyone can see it, and your enjoyment becomes an invitation: visit my channel, stay if you love it, move on if you don't. You can inspire me while I keep my full freedom to choose — and because I always have that choice, I get more curious about what you are hearing.

Chapter 03
A woman in red and a man in blue dance side by side, each in their own colour, titled “Connection Without Agreement”

Connection Without Agreement

We usually build connection out of sameness: same music, same conversation, same movie, same activity. These evenings taught me another recipe. You and I stand one metre apart in two different emotional worlds. Your track is playful and a little sexy, mine is deep and slow; you are laughing across the floor, I am feeling like I am melting. And we still see each other. Each of us fully inside our own experience, and aware of the other at the same time.

That combination produces a specific kind of peace: I can let you have your experience, you can let me have mine, and nobody has to pull anybody out of themselves. And precisely that brings us closer. What we share in this very moment is that we are both inside the zone. We recognize that and that is what connects us deeply.

Two dancers face each other in a golden glow, each with their own headphones, titled “Intimacy Without Possession”

This is what the whole night runs on.

And the intimacy grows mainly out of how little we talk.

Chapter 04
Two dancers reach for each other’s hands without words, titled “Nobody Has to Explain Themselves”

Nobody Has to Explain Themselves

Here is a social law of normal parties: stand close to someone, and within seconds one of you must speak. "Hey, how are you? Where are you from? How do you know the host? What do you do?" Two minutes later you're doing career small talk with someone you met ninety seconds ago, because apparently that's how humans introduce themselves.

With headphones on, that expectation dissolves. Nobody expects you to explain yourself, so communication finds another route: the body. A look. A smile back. A held-out hand. Somebody offers you water; you take it, they see you enjoy it, and a complete conversation has just happened — offer, response, warmth, done.

Bodies are also more honest than sentences. Speech can be edited mid-flight; the body can't lie. You can see when someone is comfortable, when a song reaches them, when they enjoy a touch, when they turn shy, when they turn sensual. The floor becomes easy to read, and an easy-to-read floor is a calm and safe place to spend a night.

Chapter 05
A woman dances with closed eyes while others watch warmly, titled “Being Seen While You Are With Yourself”

Being Seen While You Are With Yourself

One of the most intimate things you can witness is another person enjoying their own experience. You know this from festivals, when you watch people enjoying themselves on the floor. Eyes closed, arms loose, enjoyment is written all over the face. On the dancefloor you might not be connected to this person you are watching.

During this party, they let you see it, and they know they are seen by you. And that's fully okay.

You are showing how you are when you stop managing yourself, and it takes real trust. It is also my only requirement for the guest list. People who can enjoy themselves and can be silly are the best fit for this kind of party.

I mentioned it in my last article: the zone always seems to lead to play.

Chapter 06
A woman lifts a glowing ice crystal while a feather is held out nearby, titled “Offer and Response”

Offer and Response

Play at these parties often starts with objects. Somebody brings an ice cube and offers it. Somebody else holds out an arm. Both watch the cold travel across the skin; one reacts, the other reacts to the reaction — a complete little game inside thirty seconds. Chocolate becomes serious business. A feather finds a shoulder. A strange smell gets passed around like contraband. A massage device appears on somebody's ass. The hand puppet — for reasons that would be hard to explain the next morning — becomes a respected member of the party.

The mechanism is always the same: offer and response. Nobody gathers the group and announces the ice-cube exercise, thank God. One person follows an impulse, another says yes with their body, maybe a third joins, and thirty seconds later everyone has moved on. The floor keeps generating small temporary games all night.

A woman hands a bottle of water to a smiling man as a ring of light forms between them, titled “Offer and Response”

By the end of the night you may have had no long conversation at all, and still exchanged hundreds of small moments.

Chapter 07

Everyone Travels Alone and Together

After three or four hours, the group has been through a lot: many emotional worlds, dozens of tiny games, hundreds of small voluntary yeses. They have watched each other get freer, swapped clothes and touch and chocolate, and spoken maybe three full sentences. And they know each other differently now — I would say better — than after most evenings full of talk.

I mentioned briefly that we introduced rule #1: "You have to always have at least one ear connected to the headphones. If you want to have a chat with someone, please leave your headphones here and go to another room. When you're ready to join back, come in and put your headphones back on." This one is important: if you take off your headphones completely to have a conversation with someone, it is a hard crash back on earth. You might not necessarily feel it yourself, but everybody who's in the zone feels as if you've fallen out of the spaceship. And you lose touch with the zone. It's tough to describe what it does, so maybe you need to have your own experience with it.

Chapter 08
People lie close together on cushions in soft fading light, their headphones glowing red, green and blue, titled “How to Land the Spaceship Back on Earth?”

How to Land the Spaceship Back on Earth?

I have to admit that I haven't figured out how to end a drugged and kidnapped party in a decent and appropriate way. The whole thing is brand new and still under development.

Here are a few things I've tried:

  • Switch all channels to atmospheric music that slowly lands you back on Earth
  • Give a sign that everyone begins to turn their volume down, so everyone lands back at the same time
  • One time, somebody organized a cuddle puddle, showing everyone where to lie down, next to whom, and how exactly, and the chill-out music was played — one song. Then silence.

Please send me your ideas and experiments on what you think creates the best ending for the night.

No matter how we end it, I always end these nights the way I ended the best festival sets: fed and nourished.

My whole being indulged in the lifeblood it needed.

Now I am so curious if these articles ever find their way out there. And if they do, will you be inspired to throw your own Drugged and Kidnapped party? Will you go rent a silent disco somewhere? Or will you buy one? Will you use the same title and the material I offer for your party, or will you invent your own branding? Will you message me to share your experience?

Will Drugged and Kidnapped parties happen online someday? What kind of experience will that be? Is this even possible?

In any case you should watch out: An invitation with those two words might land in your inbox any day; then you'll know exactly what you'd be saying yes to.
