Here is every ingredient of the night — invitation, substances, room, outfits, music and three-channel headphones — and why each one is there. **Listen to this Rethink**13:59 min · Lean back and enjoy listening to the read-aloud Every element of this party exists because I watched its absence ruin a party. That sounds dramatic, so start with the name itself. Drugged changes how much and how deep the music can reach you. Kidnapped changes which world gets your attention. Pull either one out and you're back at a normal party, standing near a stage, hoping the next DJ is better. I am sharing all this with you, for one reason only. Now I recognize that maybe I should have said this earlier. I want you to be able to recreate this party and experience that you will enter the zone reliably — if you mix all the ingredients and stir them properly. I will provide you with the branding, the invitation cards, the invitation text, the music for each channel, and the instructions for how to reach the zone as a poster you can print or send around for everyone to read. You need to know that I will only invite people I trust, people I feel really comfortable around, to my Drugged and Kidnapped party. That is because this party becomes a very intimate space. But more about that in my next article — Part 3: The social physics of a silent Drugged and Kidnapped Party. If you got invited to my party, you would read: ВЫ ОФИЦИАЛЬНО ПРИГЛАШЕНЫ НА ТО, ЧТОБЫ ВАС НАКАЧАЛИ НАРКОТИКАМИ И ПОХИТИЛИ. You will be one of a few handpicked hostages only. You will be taken to another planet: The Zone. The Bubble. The Other Side. This is not an adventure for the faint of heart. After we’ve had a decent meal — because one should travel between dimensions hungry — you will be given: - A minimum of 3 drags from a joint - A minimum of 5 small bumps of ketamine - The possibility to refuel both at a later stage - Headphones for the whole duration of the trip, with 3 channels to choose from - Two channels will be mostly Intentional Electro - One channel will be served by you and the other kidnapped hostages - Space to dance - Space to space out - Permission to dress or undress in any quirky way for the duration of the journey - Permission to play - Rule #1: One ear always stays connected to the headphones. Please wash your ears before arrival. They’re about to receive a treat. You will deeply regret it if you don’t bring sensory surprises for your fellow inmates. Here are some ideas: Taste: something weird, something delicious, whipped cream, ice, fruit, chocolate, sour candy, something cold, something fizzy, something that makes people say “what the hell is this?” Smell: Incense, oils, perfume, herbs, flowers, resins, anything that smells like another dimension. Touch: Soft, funny, crazy, sensual, playful. Feathers, fabrics, something spiky, something silky, something fluffy, massage tools, mystery objects, strange textures, little things that make the body go “oh wow”. Sound: Bring a selection of music, downloaded for offline use, that would send you straight into the zone if it played at a festival. On that day, prepare to leave Earth. Logistics of interdimensional travel: - Saturday, XXth August - Arrive between 3–4 pm / There will be a lecture at about 5:30 on how to reach the Zone - Venue: xxx - Come with an Uber. Do not drive. - If needed, ask to stay overnight. Bring: - Bring multiple outfits, since we will pass multiple planets on our trip. - Sensory toys - Food to share If you decide to come to my party, you can't say you didn't know what you are getting into. This lecture is give to all the hostages after a mutual meal, while presenting the poster above. It gives everyone orientation and direction about the the whole frame of the evening. **How to Reach the zone** 0:00 / 5:21DownloadMP3 · 4 MB Over the years I experimented with plenty of altered states at festivals. Some made me social, some made me energetic, some produced fascinating thoughts at high speed, some sent the evening somewhere else entirely. At AfrikaBurn 2026 I noticed what one specific combination did for me. Cannabis makes music physical and emotionally available to me. Sounds get texture. The beat lands directly in the body. Small details inside a track become worth following around. Ketamine loosens the rest. Mind activity gets slower and lighter, the usual grip of identity relaxes, yesterday and tomorrow lose their pull, and whatever is happening right now becomes fascinating. Together, in my experience, they make me more available to the moment, help me to forget earth's admin field — while the music gets far more access to me than usual. I want to be clear about what I am — and am not — saying. This combination is not the only way into the zone, and it is certainly not a requirement. It is entirely possible to get there without drugs or any other substance; I have experienced that myself on occasion. It is also possible that other substances, or completely different conditions, will take someone else there. Every person is different. What I am describing is what emerged from hundreds of experiments, moments and observations: for me, and for the people I tried it with, this particular combination became an extraordinarily reliable doorway into the zone — often within fifteen minutes. That access is the whole point. You can stand in front of the best sound system in the world while your mind solves tomorrow's problems. Your body is on the dance floor; the rest of you is pondering on an email, a relationship question, an unpaid invoice. The zone starts where the music gets through to you, and the altered state helps to shift that balance. You can stand in front of the best sound system in the world while your mind solves tomorrow's problems. A word about the obvious: this is a personal account rather than a dosage guide. Numbers, effects and combinations are each person's own homework. Cannabis and ketamine carry real legal, physical and psychological risks, and every body responds to them differently. During my party, everyone is an adult who decides for themselves whether and how to change their own state: informed, consenting, in charge of their own body. That yes is part of the design. The whole night runs on freely given yeses — from the first channel switch to the last ice cube. Fair. I would have said the same not long ago. But check my track record: I took substances at more than forty festivals — and still spent most weekends standing around, waiting for better music. If drugs alone made a great party, every festival would be paradise. You've been to festivals. You know. The extra steps are the part that works. I spent twenty years waiting next to speakers. At this party, that guy finally dances and plays. We have an impressive ability to bring everyday life everywhere. You can fly across the world, stand under a giant art installation in the middle of a desert, wear glitter from head to toe — and still spend twenty minutes composing an answer to a WhatsApp message. Everyday life pulls like gravity, concretely: your identity travels with you, your worries travel with you, your unfinished tasks, your social roles and your running inner commentary - all come along for the weekend. If I throw a party at home, people arrive from their everyday life and they bring all the baggage of mental busyness and burdens. You will know what I am talking about, when your guests arrive at your house, everybody chatting, catching up - and eating. - How to get everyone into the zone? My favorite way is to simply drug and kidnap everyone when the sun sets. And for a good Drugged and kidnapped night you need to prepare the landing site before anybody gets there. Before the party begins, I transform the room to be ready for us: Projector lights, LEDs, moving colours, stars and rainbows across the walls, a ceiling that looks like a small universe and sometimes a fire in the fireplace. The living room changes dramatically and becomes the floor of magical possibilities — the stranger it looks the better. I make sure, it looks great, has space to dance and spaces to chill. People walk in and say, "What happened to your house?" Perfect. That is the room doing its job. Clothes matter more than I expected. We usually arrive at a party wearing a regular version of ourselves, and without anyone noticing, the clothes subconsciously tell us how to behave. Festival outfits offer much more freedom: glitter, fur, transparent fabrics, strange trousers, ridiculous hats, things that move when you dance. They make the wearer more interesting to look at, and they change the feeling inside the wearer. I have written a whole article about clothing (check it out here: “Why Your Outfit Matters More Than You Think – From Invisible to 1,000 Compliments”); my household takes outfits more seriously than a normal household probably would. At these parties the outfits keep changing all night. Someone sees a jacket and wants it. Two people swap trousers. A hat makes its way around the floor. Often the outfits get more sensual as the evening develops — a layer disappears, somebody changes into something they feel like showing now. Inside the party it feels just like play: one more way of saying *this is what I feel like right now*. Somebody answers with a ridiculous fur coat and three pairs of glasses. Some version of this happens every time. You are allowed to reinvent yourself three times in an evening. Why settle for one outfit when you have already gone to the trouble of leaving Earth? The altered state opens the door; the music infuses feeling, rhythm and direction. This is why I am fussy about intentional electronic music. A good track knows what it is doing. It is not just some great beats and a melody. It's a dialog between the music and your whole being. There is nothing exotic about it. Everyone has had this experience many times. But with a dance party we want to make sure every track is like that. The tracks are never empty: They are always moving you, they're playful, sensual, powerful, romantic, crazy and anything in between. Your body starts surprising even yourself. Very soon you go from "I am listening to music" to "music is all there is." And the headphones help with that, but more about it later. Each track builds its own small emotional world, and you move through those worlds physically — you live every song. That does strange things to time. After three or four hours I sometimes feel like I have been away for two weeks. The clock says: one evening in your living room. My memory says: 50 places. That is why the night feels so nourishing. You experience a lot. Silent disco headphones changed these evenings more than any single piece of equipment. For some people silent disco has a bad rep. And it is true that from outside, people dancing to music you can't hear looks ridiculous. So why am I raving about it? Listen up: It becomes magical. Everyone gets their own music: three channels — red, green, blue — and a free choice between them at any second. ![Dancers in red, green and blue light around three headphones marked red, green and blue signal, titled “The D Signal”](https://letsrethinklife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/drugged-and-kidnapped-how-the-night-works-d-signal-1440x960.webp) This solves the oldest party problem in existence: different people need different music at different moments. A track that takes me straight into the zone may leave you cold; five minutes later the roles reverse. With one sound system, somebody is always waiting. With three channels, everybody is always happy. It feels like every next track is better than the previous one, just because you decide whether you stay with it or switch the channel to another track. And because each headphone glows in the colour of its channel, the whole floor can see who is listening to what. That little light creates an entire social language, and like I mentioned earlier, it deserves its own article. It gets one: Part 3. The second control is volume, and I love it beyond reason. Turn it up, and you travel deeper into the zone. Turn it down, and Earth comes closer. Louder means deeper in; softer means closer to normality. Everyone steers their own distance all night. 80% of the time, you are likely to push the dial all the way up. Here is the whole composition in one view. A summary: After you have introduced everyone to the concept and rule #1 (one ear always stays connected to the headphones), you dish out substances. Give everyone headphones and start the music on three channels. The room quickly becomes another world. Outfits bring magic and freedom to the floor. Each piece covers a specific failure I watched for three years, one at a time. Cut the music's direction, and an altered state turns into a very long conversation. Cut the channel choice, and somebody ends up standing still, waiting for the track to change. Skip transforming the room, and everyone stays close to their weekday selves — same posture, same small talk, same edges. Put it together, though, and the shift is fast. People travel fast into the zone. Bodies start moving. The music takes over before minds catch up. Full immersion, connection and curiosity. Very soon the room begins to play. This is the most unpredictable part. Play always happens. But you won't be able to predict what it will look like or what it will be. People start interacting with flowers, furniture, and of course the other hostages. Someone brings an ice cube and offers a cold experience on the skin, while somebody plays with feathers or ropes they brought. Two are making funny love in ridiculous clothes. Two others wiggle their bums against each other. Someone feeds someone with something delicious from the kitchen. Some were topless 3 minutes ago. And have I mentioned that for most of the time on the other planet nobody really speaks much? Almost all communication and interaction happens non-verbally. This creates an unprecedented intimacy. I mean, how many parties do you know where people have fun but don't speak for hours? Almost all communication and interaction happens non-verbally. What I could not have predicted is what these evenings do *between* people. Six, eight, ten people on substances, outfits, lights, three colour channels of music, hardly any talking — these were some of the closest hours I have spent with other humans. That story is Part 3.
